Sam had to admit that she wasn't likely to miss Fandom for the most part. Oh, sure, she'd miss the gigantic house that she still couldn't believe the Alliance had set her up in, and she'd certainly miss the convenient access to "American" restaurants -- she'd developed a minor addiction to Taste of Thai. But when her reassignment orders came in late Monday night, she honestly wasn't too bothered by the idea of leaving Fandom for good.

Because of all the postings she could have gotten, retrofitting one of the fleet's best ships -- well, that was nothing to sneeze at. Even for someone with seasonal allergies like Sam's.

She had to stare at her datapad for a long time before she was able to convince herself that this was really where she was going to be stationed for the next year, effective Friday morning.

"Well," she said, looking at Rook. "This should be an interesting challenge, now shouldn't it?"

(Don't ask her about the loss of her planet less than two days ago. She was gritting her teeth and forcing herself to focus on other things.)

[[open! also, let me know if you want rook.]]

Hopefully, Riley and Éponine were enjoying the walking tour of Sam's home town. Sam thought it was preferable to spending more time at home with her mum and dad, who were quite welcoming, but a bit stifling after she'd spent so long away from home. Taking in the sights of Horizon was more in line with the experience she wanted to provide for her guests, anyway.

The area they were in was fairly rural, just on the border between a residential town and an Alliance outpost. The landscape wasn't so different from Earth: crisp grass, blue sky, a smattering of chirping birds (though different in appearance to common types of birds back on Earth, a discerning observer might note). And true to the planet's name, the sunset was extraordinary.

"Now, my clearance level won't allow any of us entrance," Sam noted as she came to a hill that overlooked the Alliance camp, albeit from a distance. "But I thought I'd let you get a look at it anyway. I used to work in one of the labs over there before I was stationed in Fandom. To be completely honest, I've had nicer work environments, but you won't find a better-stocked lab anywhere."

She bit her lip, wondering if she couldn't make this a bit more interesting. "I suppose we could get a little closer..."

That's real smart, Sammy. )

There was something unexpectedly lovely about returning home with a bag of take-out in hand and knowing that there was another living creature in her house waiting for her, Sam decided. There was something even lovelier about having that knowledge and knowing that the living creature in question wasn't, say, a spider or a moth or something. Because that was important.

"Here, girl," Sam called as she settled at her desk in her bedroom and set down the take-out bag and the plates she'd snagged from the kitchen on her way up, clicking her tongue to summon her new... housemate. Swiveling her chair around to face away from her desk, she called, "I've got half a steak for you and something I hope is a half-decent veggie burger for me. Dinner is served."

[[for one.]]

It wasn't until Sam left to get her coffee that she realized that something strange was going on. The only reason she knew anything was happening at all was because of that man she saw singing happily about the ketchup stain on his pants finally being gone -- which would have been strange on its own, but when two people joined him as backup dancers, she felt fairly sure that this had Fandom's influence written all over it.

Sam, however, didn't seem to be affected, for which she was very glad. She got home, drank her coffee, and holed up in her living room, playing chess against herself.

As you did.

[[expecting one, but open!]]
